Long Distance Laser Ray
Long Distance Laser Ray, 2010, laser, tripod, monitor, antenna, 1.160 km, MUU-Galleria, Helsinki, Finland
Info
If you want to draw a direct line from Helsinki to Hamburg, it runs below the earth’s surface due to the curvature of the earth. Using the coordinates of the MUU Gallery and the Künstlerhaus Hamburg, the course was calculated by a surveying office. In Helsinki, the laser beam hit the ground at a flat angle towards the southwest. The further course was broadcasted “live” from five imagined underground way stations in Estonia, Sweden and Denmark to a monitor. For this purpose, cooperations with (non-existing) institutes were established. The laser beam reached its greatest depth of approx. 26 km under the Swedish island of Öland. The sixth station showed light emerging from a floor grid in the courtyard of the Künstlerhaus Hamburg.
