Test Track, 2019, Videomapping, 3,50 x 4,0 m, Sternstudio, Vienna, Austria
Info
Hinrich Gross created a test track in its site-specific installation for the Sternstudio Vienna. At a moderate but consistent pace, he steers towards the boundary of the room and undertakes various attempts to visually break through it.
With the means of video mapping Hinrich Gross examines how the physically existing real space can be extended by additional dimensions. Without resorting to dazzling effects, questionable narrative or an overwhelmingly fast sequence of image changes, as they are known from the event industry from the mapping forth, he makes use of the possibility to superimpose the plane of the matter with a light plane. Here, the hybrid properties of light are demonstrated and interlocked.
On the one hand, light functions as illumination, as the presupposition of seeing in general. Particularly exciting are the moments in which the human eye is seduced by the contrast of light and shadow alone, to decipher the white wall as a black surface. At the same time, light is used as an information carrier to transport content such as colored shapes and images onto the canvas wall. Analogous to the computer-generated extension of the perception of reality / augmented reality, there are also hybrid perceptions of space on the test track of Hinrich Gross.
